Sex workers need safety. Sex workers need full decriminalisation now. But why is the need for the full decriminalisation of sex work in the U.K. so urgent? 🧵 (1/10)

Very glad to see the courts recognise that sex workers consent within agreed boundaries. Framing all sex work as rape erases this.

Today is International Sex Workers Rights Day. We join the international sex worker community in calling for the decriminalisation of sex work. Sex work is work, and decriminalisation is essential to protecting the rights and safety of sex workers. (1/10)

Sex workers do not have to prove that they love their jobs in order to deserve workers’ rights

Criminalisation has failed to reduce sex work. It has failed to keep sex workers safe. Criminalisation puts sex workers in danger. Sex workers demand full decriminalisation now. But we need your help to achieve it. 🧵🪡
Speech bubble with quote from a sex worker: “I have worked for years on the streets and in a flat. It was very hard and harsh. I was attacked three times and nearly every other woman that I knew was also attacked. The police did little or nothing. They told one of the girls that they would send her back home without her child. They treat us like criminals because the law says we are criminals.” (Susie)

On International Women’s Day this year, join us as we take to the streets to demand an end to the violence we face in every area of our lives. We demand an end to the oppressive policies and practices that enable clients and pimps to harm us.

Thank you Laura Bates @EverydaySexism for saying what needed to be said at this time of grief and mourning and including sex workers amongst women who deserve to be safe. There is no wrong type of woman.

Under the current systems of partial criminalisation, in England, Scotland & Wales, and the Nordic Model, in N. Ireland and Ireland, sex workers cannot work together for safety. Two or more sex workers using the same space, even without a manager present, is criminalised.

“As feminists we must care about consent to sexual contact, and this involves believing women when they say that consent is present, as well as when they say it is absent.”
