Reports are confirming 80 dead, so far, and the @nytimes is reporting that a white settler couple successfully recovered a ROLEX watch from their Lāhainā home.
On Friday, Elicia Stratton searched desperately through the wreckage of her Lahaina home for the Rolex watch her parents gave her when she graduated college. Suddenly, her fiancé pulled it from the ashes. “You found it!” she said, choking up. It was damaged but still legible.

Reports suggest 93 people are dead, 1000 people missing still, and 2700 structures destroyed. To consider this an economic opportunity to acquire land for development & profit is beyond the pale. The colonial speculation of disaster capitalism is happening right now in Lāhainā.
Lahaina residents worry that rebuilt homes in their Maui town could slip into the hands of affluent outsiders seeking a tropical haven rather than homegrown residents who give the Hawaiian island its spirit and identity. apnews.com/article/hawaii…

Say it with me: Hawaiʻi wasn’t peacefully incorporated into the US. It was forcefully invaded 130 years ago today.

The message from Maui community is loud and clear: cancel your vacation and travel plans. Lāhainā needs time to heal and regenerate, and Native Hawaiians and local communities must be centered in the rebuild. Not realators, developers, and tourists. Lāhainā isn’t for sale.
The devastation in Maui after shocking wildfires is clear. There are still hundreds of people missing and unaccounted for. And there are thousands of people who have lost their homes and livelihoods - and desperately in need of aid and shelter. So does it surprise you to know,

As Hawaiians wake up to the news of Palestinian anticolonial resistance in Gaza to Israeli settler colonialism, remember that—from Hawaiʻi to Palestine—occupation is a crime. A lāhui that stands for decolonization and deoccupation should also stand behind freedom for Palestine.

“In a near-unanimous vote, Hawaii's Senate on Thursday became the first state legislative body in the U.S. to endorse a permanent cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.”

Colonial greed transformed the wetlands of Lāhainā. This included water diversions for sugar plantations & land use change from agricultural production to livestock grazing. The same invasive grasses that white sugar barons planted in 19 & 20c exploded like napalm in high winds.
Fire expert Clay Trauernicht (@claytrau) says changes to the Hawaiian landscape, such as the "dramatic expansion" of "non-native tropical grasses," helped provide much of the fuel for the devastating wildfires on Maui that have killed dozens of people so far.

Tips on being less racist: Don’t write an article encouraging people to decrease racism by increasing colonization. Don’t reference non-Hawaiian scholars as Hawaiian. Don’t feel entitled to write about Hawaiʻi. Perhaps just don’t move to Hawaiʻi. nyti.ms/2FQpFan

If you're supporting the memes going around today that celebrate Native Hawaiians killing Captain James Cook in 1779, you should be supporting Native Hawaiians of this generation who continue to scrap with white supremacy, imperialism, and settler colonialism.

Pandemic tourism and settler colonial primitivism on full display. Indigenous Oceanic peoples are dying from covid at disproportionate rates in occupied Hawaiʻi, while these unmasked tourists drum and dance carefree—some without clothes—at the beach in Maui.
