STORY + DATA: The scale of Canadian efforts to boycott US goods is becoming clear. New border data shows crossborder traffic has utterly plummeted in the last month. Southbound traffic during the recent holiday weekend dropped by more than 40% from last year. Link ๐Ÿ‘‡

"It was the pine beetle, not climate change" is an argument that shows stunningly little knowledge of the pine beetle and forestry. The pine beetle, which is historically kept in check by frigid winter temperatures, is a great example of how climate change can lead to fires.
The fires in Jasper should hold a lessen to decision makers about public policy, effective leadership and the role of science when there is controversy, writes Gary G. Mar. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articlโ€ฆ

THREAD! Nine months ago, I was working on a story connected to the Nooksack River and Mt. Baker. I sought an interview with Mitchell Hahn, BC's Inspector of Dikes, about his involvement in the Nooksack River International Task Force. Let's go back and look at the tape.

Vaccines are like winter tires, I'm just realizing. And requiring vaccines to go to a restaurant is *just like* requiring winter tires to drive on a highway road. It's a great comparison for, say, certain folks in Hope.

this sounds basically like the BC camping problem and the BC hospital bed problem and the BC city park problem and various other BC problems
An underrated part of the problem with B.C. Ferries is that in the last 30 years the province gained an extra 1.5 million people, but the number of sailings and the size of the ships is pretty much what it was in the 1990s

A reminder that our public broadcaster doesn't have any reporters based in the Fraser Valley, a region of 400,000 that is not at all identical to Metro Vancouver. CBC folks have been doing their best. But it would be better if their bosses paid for reporters who lived here.

The death rate for kids in residential schools was comparable to POWs in the custody of Nazi Germany. This has been known for years. This is a grotesque red herring that minimizes facts that have been proven. Read the TRC report.
The number of confirmed child burials at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School site is zero. Zero. No one should be afraid of the truth. Not lawyers, their governing bodies, or anyone else. 1/3 nationalpost.com/opinion/michaeโ€ฆ

The Horgan vacation thing isn't optics. It related to the idea that a leader - be it a boss or otherwise - inspires with the idea that they are "In it together" with those they lead. When that facade collapses, the people who are going through The Thing feel hurt.

Lytton burned down three years ago and not a single home has been fully rebuilt yet.
If you think Canadaโ€™s Housing Plan is ambitious, thatโ€™s because it is. Weโ€™re going to build almost 4 million new homes by 2031. Weโ€™re going to change the way homes are built in Canada. And weโ€™re going to create a new generation of homeowners. Letโ€™s get going.

One thing that this story illustrates is how our democracy has suffered from the loss of local reporters. If there were more reporters talking to candidates, we would better know which candidates were noxious.
NEW: A B.C. Conservative candidate awaiting the results of a recount that could determine who forms the provincial government used a racist slur to describe Indigenous Peoples, among other comments, during an election-night interview. vancouversun.com/news/local-newโ€ฆ

Not only does this obviously legitimize Conservative carbon tax criticism for NDP aligned ppl, the side effect will be encouraging those ppl to wonder what other Conservative analyses are valid. Not exactly a path toward long-term progressive success!
