- Steve Biko was an anti-apartheid activist killed by the apartheid government on this day in 1977. He was a Black Consciousness Movement leader and his memory and political thought, particularly his book I Write What I Like energise popular struggle in South Africa today.
- Aijaz Ahmad, our senior fellow has left us today. He was a leading Marxist philosopher and cultural theorist, author and editor of many books and journals. Rest in power, comrade. ✊

- 103 years ago on this day, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Leibknect – leaders of the German Communist Party – were killed in cold blood in Berlin. When the security guards came to arrest her, Luxemburg filled her bag with books, including Goethe’s Faust, which she was then reading.
