No it wasnt, they had to introduce Thanos as a Villian after 8 years of hype. Every Villian needs to kill a beloved character in order to attract hate and a desire from fans for them to lose. Lokis death also set up Thor's character development and motivation throughout the movie
Exactly this. He associates it with trauma, only when he realises that his grandfather was protecting him in Vol. 1 by pulling him out of the room he wants to return and find his family.
