Marvel. Hear me out. Just… replace him.

Just get a different actor to play him in every scene. Never comment on it. Patrick Wilson. Will Arnett. Jack Black. Etc.

The internet *is* real life. The distinction you're looking for is in-person vs. online, or physical vs. digital. It's not real vs. imaginary. The things said and done here have real consequences, and can hurt (or help) real people.

No matter how exhausting you think living with a neurodivergent person is I promise you it is more exhausting being neurodivergent in a world where people treat you like a burden for not meeting neurotypical standards.

The Venn diagram of people who think it’s fine for kids to be forced to remain pregnant, give birth, and be responsible for a baby, and people who think kids are β€œtoo young” to know that they’re trans and receive affirming medical care is just a circle.

An excellent choice, no doubt. I just like Patrick Wilson bc some people wouldn’t even notice the switch. πŸ˜‚

This interaction is deeply upsetting. All over this thread I see autistic people genuinely and kindly trying to help a parent understand, and the response here in particular had me sobbing bc I’ve experienced that same accusation even after explaining myself. /1

Lara Bradford:
Genuine question - if the terms Aspergers
and high functioning are deemed
inappropriate or outdated, what is the
correct term to use?

CraftySpaceGeek:
Autism. It's all Autism.

Lara Bradford:
The reason I ask is my teenager is autistic,
but this would not always be apparent to
people he comes into contact with. When
talking to teachers etc I need a way to
describe where he is on the spectrum in a
way that they can easily understand.

Becca, Murder Hornet:
Talk about specific areas where he may
need more support than someone who is
allistic as well as accommodations he might
need (ex. Light sensituvity/sunglasses), you
could also discuss as any areas where he
may have greater strengths than is typical.

Lara Bradford:
Is there a shorthand term which NT people
would understand quickly though, like those
mentioned previously?

Becca, Murder Hornet:
The issue is that they don't actually
understand when you use shorthand.
Instead, they will make assumptions and
some of them may be right, but many of
them won't.

Becca, Murder Hornet:
This article might help you understand.

"Autism is a Spectrum" Doesn't Mean
What You Think

Lara Bradford:
As a mum of an autistic person I understand
plenty. What I am trying to do is
communicate my child's needs to those who
don't, in an easy-to-understand format.

Becca, Murder Hornet:
I wasn't talking down to you if that's what
you think. That article helped me to
understand things and I'm autistic.
What needs do you think are clearly
conveyed by the words "high functioning
autistic"?

Lara Bradford:
You know it's weird, I expected more
support on here from the autistic
community. What a shame you can't
discuss this in a helpful way.
    The final screenshot.

Becca, Murder Hornet:
I'm trying. I legitimately was not talking
down to you. We tend to be straightforward
and honest and I fit that particular
stereotype or generalization. I just want to
work through the logic of it with you.

Becca, Murder Hornet:
From what I understand, when you say
"high
functioning
usually what most people
understand is that the person will likely not
be non-speaking or have a co-occurring
intellectual disability. That's about it. It
doesn't tell you what the person's needs are
at all.

Becca, Murder Hornet:
And our needs can be really variable, not
only if you compare between different
autistic people, but even the same person
on different days or in different situations.

Becca, Murder Hornet:
I am 100% speaking to you earnestly here,
but in order to help, I would need to know
what your thought process and knowledge
base is and I can't do that if you don't tell

It hurts so much to be constantly misunderstood and misrepresented no matter how clear and genuine we’ve been bc nts expect us to communicate like them. And this wasn’t the only occurrence. Several people explained clearly the issue and she just kept rephrasing her question /2
