A shout at the ether: If you care about what I do, or about what any of my colleagues do, there's a @PhillyInquirer subscription discount going right now. Maybe think about it. Or don't, whatever. But if you like my soccer coverage maybe think about it. inquirer.com/tannenwald

"Don't talk [bleep] about the U.S. women." I asked #SWE’s Kosovare Asllani and Magdalena Eriksson what they think of the #USA’s future, amid the celebrations around the world at the Americans’ demise. They did not hold back: inquirer.com/soccer/naomi-g… #FIFAWWC #BeyondGreatness
Kosovare Asllani It's the U.S. They will raise their standards, and they're going to come back. I've heard there's been a lot of talk about it, but they will come back for sure. They have so much quality in their team, and this defeat will not take them down. I expect them to be ready for the next World Cup. We see more and more national teams are investing and raising their level as well, but, I mean, they [the U.S.] have a really good team. So I wouldn't say that they're out of the game at all. So don't talk [bleep] about the U.S. women. I think you should be proud of your team. You have a really good team, and really good players, and they are taking the fight not just on the pitch, outside of the pitch. And this is what it takes to raise women's football to the next level. So I think you should encourage them and be a little bit more positive towards them.
Magdalena Eriksson I think they proved today they're still an amazing team. They're definitely the toughest team we've faced so far in the tournament. They have amazing players. And like you said, the youngsters really impressed me today. I think both [Naomi] Girma and [Sophia] Smith had an amazing game. You also have [Catarina] Macario and [Mallory] Swanson that are injured. So, no, the future is still bright for the U.S. They're still a massive powerhouse in women's football, and they will be for a long time.

There aren’t many communal experiences in America anymore, but watching the Dallas Cowboys collapse in the playoffs is still one.

I'll give one concrete example of what could have been done differently tonight, and I know for a fact will be different in 2026 because I've seen detailed plans. At World Cups, and I'm sure at the Euros, the ticketed entry perimeter is far out beyond the stadium gates.

It has to come from Concacaf. Not U.S. Soccer, not (in this instance at least) the FMF. Concacaf has to force Mexico to forfeit a game because of the chant. That is how to have the impact. (Though if it was forfeited, it would be a 3-0 result, and, well...)
