I’m getting a lot of questions (and seeing a lot of memes) about why it’s taking so long to get results in Nevada's Senate race. This thread is by no means comprehensive, but here are some details about why the count is taking a while:

By law, Nevada cannot go any faster than it’s going. As Washoe County Registrar Jamie Rodriguez said on Wednesday: “We don’t want to do it fast, we want to do it right. It is extremely important that we are transparent in how we’re doing it.”

Gov. Lombardo signs #SB163, a bill mandating health insurance, including Medicaid, cover all medically necessary gender-affirming treatments and eliminate exclusions that have historically been used to avoid paying for treatments classified as “cosmetic.”
Today Nevada solidifies its ranking as the BEST place to live as an openly LGBTQ person, as #SB163 was signed into law. NO INSURANCE COMPANY can deny medically necessary coverage to trans people here! w/ @DallasHarrisNV @Senatorspearman @CeceliaGNV @NVSenateDems 1/2

“Process” means different things in different states. But here's an in-depth infographic explaining the process in NV from Washoe County: washoecounty.gov/voters/files/W…

Why is it time-consuming to count mail-in ballots? When mail-in ballots arrive, they are placed into trays. Each tray holds about 350-400 ballots and takes workers about 8 hours to process from start to finish. Even with multiple people working simultaneously, it takes a while.

Inbox: @JosephMLombardo announced he is activating the National Guard to support law enforcement on Election Day as a "precautionary" measure. "[It's] one more way Nevada officials are preparing to ensure a smooth, secure, and safe election for the people of Nevada in 2024."
Pursuant to procedure, 60 total members of the National Guard will be activated on standby status and stationed in Nevada National Guard facilities in both Carson City and Las Vegas. They will be available to support existing law enforcement preparations for Election Day on things like traffic enforcement and building security, and to coordinate and facilitate communication across the state if additional support is needed.

“After consulting with stakeholders across the state, I have decided that a precautionary activation of the National Guard makes sense at this time. We do not expect that these personnel will need to be deployed,” said Governor Joe Lombardo. “As a first responder, I know first-hand the importance of being prepared, and this decision reflects my commitment to safety and preparedness on Election Day.  As always, I am deeply grateful to the men and women of our National Guard, and I appreciate their service to our state and country.”

First, delays in election results are expected. Counting mail ballots takes time, and ballots are still arriving through Saturday. There are also specific processes and deadlines required by law. You can see some of the deadlines in this timeline:
For those voting by mail, ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day (Nov. 8) or delivered to drop boxes by the close of polls.
Election Night (Nov. 8): Polls close at 7 p.m. PST. After all polling locations close across the state, election officials may begin releasing vote tallies. Counties are permitted to begin counting mail ballots 15 days before Election Day.
The last day for mail ballots to be received and counted by county election officials is Nov. 12, 2022.
The last day for voters to “signature cure,” or address any issue with the signature on their mail ballot, is Nov. 14, 2022.
All counting must be completed ten days after the election (or by Nov. 18)

An NSEA spokesperson said: "Schools Over Stadiums is committed to pursuing every possible path to stop the use of public funds to subsidize a billionaire’s stadium. This includes litigation as well as giving Nevadans the opportunity to vote to stop this misguided project."
In baseball news, it looks like there's a new filing for a PAC: "Schools Over Stadiums." The filing said that the purpose of the PAC is to "prioritize public education over corporate tax giveaways." The address on the PAC filing is the same as the NSEA nvsos.gov/elections/3589…

Last week, the Trump campaign challenged a Nevada law allowing elections officials to accept mail ballots for up to 4 business days after Election Day. I got curious, and records from @NVSOS show that mail after Election Day was 5% of all ballots in Clark and 2.9% in Washoe.

Part of the process includes signature verification. Once a signature is verified, the envelope with the ballot can be batched and sorted. The ballot is then: - Taken out "Extracted" - Marked with a unique identifier - Rechecked/sorted - Scanned (votes counted) - Archived

What happens with signature issues? If someone forgets to sign a ballot or there’s a signature mismatch, the county will need to contact the voter as part of a signature-curing process. Voters whose ballots need signature curing will have through Monday, Nov. 14th, to do so.
