A lot of these Toonami interstitials were basically AMVs on TV. The people running Cartoon Network back then were so genuinely hip in a non-pandering way unlike Nick or especially Disney

Tank Girl cost 25 million to make. A Goofy Movie, which came out the same year, cost 18 million. They coulda made this a fully animated film, but they probably thought an adult animated feature was too risky, so instead they made a flop that grossed 6.5 mil total. This is

Zim was a unique looking show because Jhonen Vasquez had a very angular, high-contrast art style & with "Retro Flat" becoming the hip industry style at the time I'm sure they wanted to animate it that way, but he must have insisted on animating his art style in a

Genndy & Craig directed better “anime style” action scenes on their funny 90s cartoon shows than most serious American action series self-consciously trying to do that today. It’s like how a lot of comedic actors are better at drama than most actors because comedy is harder

I also want to mention for those who don't know, this type of guy HATED anime. There was ZERO cross-pollination between anime fans & American animation fandom for the longest time. The situation today is more complex but maybe worse because American animation fandom is still

The backlash over the animation makes it clear how bad rigging is on a 1:1 comparison to when a show had cel animation - even minimal, perfunctory animation. Mike Judge has a subtle, human, well-observed approach to character design & animation acting, & it still looks cheapened
