Art is a real job. I complete a service in exchange for payment.
This was posted and removed from general chat in my Discord server - let me explain why this is a bad take.
Went out with a guy and he gave me his phone to pick the playlist in the car. He had a playlist called āsexy timeā so naturally I chose that one.
It was 9 hours of non-stop Star Wars cantina band.
We are going out again tomorrow.
The āStarving Artistā slaving away for hours and hours on end, not for payment but to āgive the gift of inspirationā has been romanticized to the point of harm.
This mindset is why people undervalue art as a service. This is why people have asked me for free art all my life. āWell you like drawing donāt you?ā
It makes it hard for artists to charge fair rates and be proud of being successful. You feel you have to be pushing all the time.
What happens when youāre overworked and underpaid? You are beyond stressed out and uninspired. Thereās not much art happening then.
This is exactly what contributed to my burnout. I only just started putting my foot down and valuing my time and skill.
