Pacific Fleet Against All Odds - 80 years since the battle of Shumshu Island (the last battle of World War II). This was an operation to capture Japan's most heavily fortified island in the Kurils and decisively secure the USSR's Far Eastern flank.
#OTD in 1975, several crew members seized the Soviet frigate Storozhevoy to protest corruption in the Brezhnev government. The USSR deployed half the Baltic fleet and 60 aircraft to pursue and retake the ship. The incident inspired Tom Clancy to write THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.
If you want to know my actual thoughts on the Yak-38: No, obviously I don't actually believe its the "best plane ever with zero flaws" (there was of course many). If I had to summarize my criticism into one idea it would be that the Harrier grew up and the Forger didn't.
