Goodbye Erasmus.
Because of @EUErasmusPlus I was able to study at Paris 7 and get my first job in journalism. It transformed me from a very shy 20-year old into someone who could speak French and realised she could survive in a big city. I was very lucky.
MPs have voted against New Clause 10 being read a second time, by 344 votes to 254.
This new clause would have required the Government to seek to negotiate continuing full membership of the EU’s Erasmus+ education and youth programme.
Things are rarely simple.
But if you’re going to force people to show ID to vote, you have to give everyone free ID. Not on demand or request. Issued automatically.
If you don’t like that because it doesn’t feel British - don’t demand voter ID.
Discomfiting.
I think the right response is: a politician is not my friend, but a public servant whom I will treat according to their actions; I owe you no duty of allegiance, nor will I suspend my critical faculties for your convenience.
Some people are dismissing this because no general election likely for a while. But winning power is not the point for Farage. The point, Russia-style, is to disrupt. He can rely on the media to amplify his message. /1
Writing in tomorrow's Daily Telegraph, @Nigel_Farage and @TiceRichard declare that "lockdowns don't work" and say their new party will back a "focused protection" policy to protect only the most vulnerable to allow the rest of the population to develop herd immunity.
I’m looking forward to 2024 by watching Election 97 on the BBC Parliament channel.
Paxman has just said to Portillo: “on the basis of this exit poll you might be one of the few cabinet ministers to keep his seat.”
Garden centres - fine to open.
Dentists, optometrists, schools, hairdressers, nurseries - closed indefinitely.
It’s hard not to conclude that Britain is a country run for the benefit of car-owning pensioners.
Quick update on how the rebuilding of Winchester College's sports centre is going. Roofs are on and the internal work, including underfloor heating on the squash and Fives courts, is well underway.

Govt now publishes law FIFTEEN MINUTES before it comes into force. And not esoteric law, but regs that affect us all. Recommend you read Adam’s analysis and ponder what ‘mingling’ might mean.
🚨They are here. 15 minuets before they come into force. A new record - and not a good one.

Last night I went to a gig and felt quite youthful, but then a barrister tweeted that he’d seen a High Court judge there and I realised the sobering truth.
It’s been five and a half years since I started thinking seriously about Brexit. I’ve nothing new to say about it on this sad day - except that in those years lying has steadily become the norm for Conservative politicians. /1
