More significant census result is identity: British only, 31.86%, Irish only 29.13%, Northern Irish only, 19.78%. A decade ago: British 40%, Irish 25%, NI 21%. That’s a big tumble in British identity.

Sometimes it can feel like Ireland has too much history. Actually we need more, and are getting it. Seven centuries of Irish archives painstakingly recreated after being destroyed in civil war

Notional Catholics outnumbering notional Protestants hardly makes a united Ireland inevitable. But it's a warning to unionists that they need to court the middle ground and moderate nationalists before it's too late. They've known this for decades. And they just can't do it.

Biden posters and welcome signs everywhere. 'The kettle is on Joe, come on home.' #ballina @POTUS

Biden and @MichealMartinTD due to visit Dundalk's Windsor bar this evening. Owner Donal McGeough: 'I’m quite calm at the moment but it’ll probably get a bit hairy later. If they start looking for food I’m in trouble because there’s no chef.'

Henry McDonald died this evening at the age of 57. He had cancer. This is heartbreaking for all who knew and loved him and a huge loss to journalism. His hunger for stories, and life, was legendary. I think this was his last tweet. RIP Henry.
What’s going on! Everton beat Arsenal. Cliftonville knock out Coleraine on pens in Irish Cup. Hibs win away. Ireland triumph in Cardiff. The stars aligned to cheer me up today. Roll the Dyche for Anfield next Monday.

Thrilled to share my book's UK cover. I love it. Title is rather direct but then so is a bomb. @mudlarkbooks @HarperCollinsUK

For this piece on Ireland's ooh ah up the Ra controversy I asked Trinity College students how many people died in the Troubles. Answers ranged from 50 to 20,000.

Memorial in Dublin today to the woman who shot Mussolini. "It is now time to bring Violet Gibson into the public eye and give her a rightful place in the history of Irish women and in the history of the Irish nation and its people." rte.ie/news/dublin/20… via @rte

Spent the evening interviewing mainly teenage loyalists in Newtownabbey and Belfast. All convinced Protestants have become 2nd class citizens and that if they don't cause ructions they'll continue to be walked over. Political failure has bred nihilism. Really dispiriting.

Marching down the Shankill against the protocol, against Boris, Biden, DUP, EU, Dublin. Will marches kill the protocol? Nope, says everyone I spoke to. Only violence, and it will come.

At least 12 IRA members committed this slaughter in 1975. It was so awful the IRA pretended someone else did it. "Kingsmill was an overtly sectarian attack by the IRA. It was mounted because the deceased men were Protestants and for no other reason."

Joe, ex-loyalist prisoner, served 18 years, lit the Irish unity banner. Says if violence needed to overturn protocol so be it.
