- My car broke down last year - the clutch gave out. I tried passing a law making it illegal for my car to stop working, tried suing it, tried arresting it and tried sacking it. Turned out that I needed to spend money maintaining and fixing it. Who knew...
- I challenged a politician today, in private, and said that the policy of deporting people to Rwanda is wrong. I was expressly told that priests should not make political statements. If the church doesn’t challenge injustice then it facilitates it. Deportation is evil.
- We are all one accident, one illness, one trauma away from being unable to work. Not everyone has millions in the bank or is married into billions. If benefits stop after a year people will die.
- Hilarious that @BBCr4today is putting Kier Starmer under pressure about tax and spending plans while the actual economy is being driven off a cliff by the actual government…
- Someone told me earlier that they can't find anywhere to live in Rye because of all the immigrants arriving in boats. I'm afraid I told him that unless the immigrants are buying all the houses and letting them as Air B&Bs then he is probably blaming the wrong people.
- "Christian" is not a synonym for White or English. It means to be a follower of Christ. And I don't get the impression that Jesus would be a big fan of English Nationalism.
- Farrow & Ball have released a new colour: Sue Gray. However it is a very light shade, which means that if spread too thinly it looks like whitewash.
- I see that Trump has withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement. True story: I once heard an American say that they had no interest in the climate in Paris, so why should they be part of it. That's the challenge.
- Just been speaking to a policeman from Arkansas who is on holiday in the UK and visited Rye. He seems genuinely shocked at the lack of guns everywhere and also genuinely surprised to hear that we prefer it that way.
