The LA County Sheriff's Department's announcement that it has launched a criminal investigation into a journalist because of her reporting is appalling. This blatantly retaliatory conduct aimed at @latimes & @AleneTchek violates the First Amendment. @katie_rcfp's full statement:
Graphic with statement from Katie Townsend, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Deputy Executive Director and Legal Director that says: “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s announcement that it has launched a criminal investigation into a journalist because of her reporting is appalling. This blatantly retaliatory conduct aimed at the Los Angeles Times and its reporter Alene Tchekmedyian is beyond the pale, and violates the First Amendment. Publishing newsworthy information about an alleged law enforcement cover up that sought to block an investigation into the use of excessive force is constitutionally protected activity, and is clearly in the public interest. We condemn the Department’s actions in the strongest terms, and urge it to immediately drop this purported investigation."

Last night’s assault on a @BBC cameraman is an assault on our shared First Amendment values, & sadly it’s not the first. This troubling trend of physical & verbal attacks on our free press must end. No journalist should face violence for doing their job.nytimes.com/2019/02/12/us/…

It’s because of his determination to support journalists, like Jim Acosta and Brian Karem, and media organizations facing a wide array of First Amendment matters that we’re proud to honor @BoutrousTed with a Freedom of the Press Award this May. #RCFP50 bit.ly/2OJluBi

.@katie_rcfp spoke to @maddow about the LA County Sheriff's Dept.'s purported investigation into reporter @AleneTchek. "The public needs that kind of reporting to hold law enforcement accountable. The public should be outraged by the [dept.'s] attempt to silence that reporting."
