People need to be able to talk about suicide without being afraid of police involvement, incarceration, or commitment in a psychiatric facility.

There’s a way out of the cycle. It’s called abolition.

Let’s not with “we survived 2020!” because far too many of our community members did not, and it is not their fault.

We need to be able to hold space for both: psychiatric medications have both saved *and* destroyed people’s lives. Many times the difference is in choice, autonomy, and informed consent. Some of us have access to choice, & some of us have it taken away at every opportunity.

We can call out & name white supremacist violence without faulting on ableism (which is its backbone). No, Donald Trump doesn’t belong in a psych ward. No, these domestic terrorists are not unhinged. They’re not mentally unstable. They’re WHITE SUPREMACISTS.

#FreeThemAll includes folks incarcerated in psychiatric facilities + nursing homes. Abolition of our institutions must not leave behind our Disabled, mad, sick, and elderly community members — trapped and left to die inside of congregate + carceral settings.

For everyone viewing #FreeBritney from the lens of “this isn’t right— she’s not (Disabled, incapacitated, incompetent, mentally ill) because she can (work, communicate effectively about her abuse, make decisions, be a mother, post on social media)” — that is NOT the point:

Let’s not forget that Simone Biles disclosed having ADHD *after* her confidential medical records were leaked to the public. She didn’t get a choice in that but we have a choice in choosing not to uplift information that hasn’t been confirmed by her directly.

In the current US mental health system, there are practically zero methods for seeking non-coercive, voluntary crisis or inpatient support.

Just facilitated a training for a university called “Disability Justice on Campus: Non-Carceral Approaches to Bystander Intervention.” AKA stop calling the police on students in crisis. If you are an admin, Professor, staff person, etc. — we’d love to do this at more schools.

@cripchick once said, "I want to leave a legacy of disabled people knowing we are powerful and beautiful because of who we are, not despite it." And she has done just that. We grieve with our Disabled communities for the tremendous loss of Stacey Park.

“There is little to no therapeutic element to most emergency evaluations. It’s just risk assessment, which means clinicians will make the decision which best protects them from liability.” - @awaisaftab
