⚽️ As the 2026 World Cup kicks off, CPJ urges all journalists covering the games, particularly in the United States, to take precautions to prepare for potential interactions with law enforcement, crowd and police violence, and device searches and seizures.
In April, CPJ condemned the Kuwaiti government’s decision to revoke the citizenship of U.S.-Kuwaiti journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin and his two sisters, just days after his release from two months of wrongful detention.
“The Kuwaiti authorities are now appealing and continue to seek to criminalize me for simply doing my job as a journalist. I hope the Kuwaiti courts reject this and that all the charges against me are dismissed, fully and unconditionally. Journalism is not a crime,” Ahmed
Ahmed Shihab-Eldin and his international counsel welcomed the UN experts statement. The statement comes one day before Shihab-Eldin's case will again be before Kuwaiti courts, in an appeal from the judgment issued on April 23, 2026.
