I am in Berlin and you can cut the tension with a knife. Merkel is on the brink at the moment. In fact, one foot is over the ledge and she is peering into the abyss. AfD may be merely in opposition, but their pressuring of CSU from the right may lead to end of her chancellorship.
Biggest story you're likely missing right now: Merkel in an internal party crisis in Germany (over migration) and could lose a confidence vote this week, leading to her resignation. Situation in Berlin on a knife edge.

Wow. Germany is reportedly planning to DECREASE defense spending, w/ argument that the 100 billion euro special fund announced after the invasion will cover shortcomings. That fund was supposed to supplement, not replace, defense spending at the 2 percent of GDP threshold!

Trump at UN in 2018: "Reliance on a single foreign supplier can leave a nation vulnerable to extortion and intimidation ... Germany will become totally dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course." Reaction? Derision.

Josep Borrell justifies EU autonomy @MunSecConf : “You (Poland) live in freedom because of the Vatican and the United States. I lived under dictatorship for forty years (in Spain) because of the Vatican and the United States. So I cannot say I see the United States the same way.”

The state of the West: Biden: America is back, baby! Let’s rally democracies, including against authoritarian China! Macron: See! He said China. US will pivot from us. We need strategic autonomy! Merkel: We love US alliance! (We also love Chinese markets). Johnson: USA! USA!

My latest on why seeking equilibrium in Ukraine is a fool’s errand. “Putin’s annexation of vast parts of Ukraine puts an end to any hopes for a negotiated settlement.” | As Putin tries to carve up Ukraine, Biden must go for broke — & deliver better weapons

If this was a GOP administration, the press focus would be on how we got into this mess in the first place. But since it’s the Dems, it’s “The Envoy” on the cover shuttling around the Middle East bleary-eyed (but finding time for a photo shoot in the Treaty Room at State).

Zelensky has performed near perfect in this crisis, showing remarkable restraint as his country comes under attack while also pushing the West for support. He’s exposed Putin by denying him any pretext for invasion, kept his economy afloat, and prepared his ppl for war. 👏 👏
Zelensky addressing the Russian people in Russian now: “Today I initiated a phone call with the president of the Russian Federation. The result was silence, though the silence should be in the Donbas. As a result I want to address all citizens of Russia…
