If everyone would make the small sacrifice of wearing a mask and social distance, the chances of having a complete winter sports season would go way up. Not a lot to ask.

I've never met a kinder, more thoughtful or wiser person than my 66-year-old brother, Jerry Ruff, who passed away Thursday while sleeping, of a heart attack. Was in impeccable shape. One of my six siblings and the best writer in a family full of them. His wish: Love each other.

Wow, wow, wow. Kasson-Mantorville beats No. 1-ranked Becker 24-20 in one of the most dramatic finishes you'll see. Matthew Donovan put on a show in the last 1:28.

Fun piece on our youngest son, Mike. So proud of this kid!

Rochester John Marshall freshmen basketball players Lilly Meister and Katie Hurt were both offered by Kansas yesterday. Impressive, to say the least.

I feel horrible for the Rochester Lourdes girls basketball team, which was likely going to win a state title. Now it's not going to get that chance. The Eagles were one heck of a team, with the emphasis on TEAM. Played so well together. Loved watching them do their thing.

Stunning that Kansas State's Ayoka Lee (Byron), Iowa State's Kristin Scott (Kasson-Mantorville) and North Carolina's Alyssa Ustby (Rochester Lourdes) all came from the same smallish conference, the Hiawatha Valley League. All standouts for their respective college hoops teams.

So saddened to hear of the passing of Kasson-Mantorville graduate and basketball star Braxton Raymond. Such a tough kid. Here is a story I wrote about him one year ago. Rest in peace, Braxton. postbulletin.com/sports/localsp…

Aby Shubert — arguably the best girls basketball player in southeastern Minnesota — injured her knee last week in a game with Goodhue. MRI is coming Thursday. Prayers up for Aby, a great player and an even better kid. Headed to play at Xavier next year.

Sorry I am getting to this late, but Byron graduate and Kansas State freshman Ayoka Lee was named first-team All-Big 12 in women's basketball. The 6-5 center was also named the league's Freshman of the Year. Lee averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots per game.

Rochester Lourdes grad Alyssa Ustby went off for North Carolina today in an upset win over North Carolina State: 20 points (8 of 10 shooting, 4-4 on 3's), 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals in 37 minutes. One heck of a freshman.

John Marshall has hired a new football coach. He's Kyle Riggott, a former Century and Minnesota State, Mankato star player. Heck of a hire by the Rockets. The 28-year-old Riggott has a strong, strong reputation as a guy and a coach. I'll have the story later this afternoon.
