Lilo & Stitch (2025) review: it didn't occur to me before that "spreading misinformation about Medicaid" is a problem a Disney live-action adaptation could possibly have

- there exists a welfare program where you can't buy unhealthy/"expensive" food, it's called WIC, and it's awful. I have a friend who worked at a grocery store and regularly watched people break down crying because they picked a kind of chickpeas WIC doesn't cover
- Replying to @ozyfrantzdid you know infants only get meat on WIC if their mothers are breastfeeding? if your baby drinks formula (perhaps because your shitty minimum-wage job doesn't give you time to pump) then WIC doesn't cover baby food with protein. because fuck you.
- Replying to @ozyfrantzin California WIC covers one jar of peanut butter per month for pregnant or breastfeeding women. what if you're allergic to peanuts? can you swap? no. because fuck you
- Replying to @ozyfrantzbefore we talk about limiting what people can spend their food stamps on, I suggest revising WIC so that fewer than 10% of the regulations could be ended with "because fuck you"
- Replying to @wirmgurlNani is coerced into giving up guardianship of Lilo because she failed to sign up for Medicaid and thus Medicaid wouldn't pay Lilo's hospital bills, but if Nani gave up guardianship then the government would pay for Lilo's bills
- Replying to @ozyfrantz and @wirmgurlTHAT IS NOT AT ALL HOW MEDICAID WORKS.
- Replying to @Travel70780927The moviemakers weren't blindsided by a policy change-- they inaccurately represented retroactive coverage, which has *always* been Medicaid policy. Frankly, I think misinformation about what Medicaid covers is dangerous. For better or for worse, people do learn from fiction.
- "Ask criminals why they did what they did" is IMO an underappreciated genre of study. Surprisingly many criminals will tell you "I did it because I'm a bad person"!
- Replying to @inkyubus13they say "insurance" but Nani & Lilo are obviously on Medicaid
- Replying to @louverloverthe pros 100% outweigh the cons, but we also have the option to give people money without the BS! + it's not that the system is impossible in a vacuum, it's that people are stressed and overwhelmed and unsure how to feed their kids already and it's just One More Fucking Thing
- my test for political wackos of all stripes is the Dinner Party Test: if I invited you to a dinner party full of your Hated Non-Political Demographic (queers, evangelicals, Asians, landlords, w/e) could you be a polite, gracious guest who is a pleasure to have over?
- "if Thing is transphobic, then 90% of people would be transphobic!" yes. that is true. transphobia is very popular
