I just learned of the passing of prolific actor Akira Nakao. He was friendly and warm whenever I met him on the Godzilla set. Once, when I was trying out Mothra puppets on "Tokyo SOS," he ran over from Stage 1 and said, "Let's take a funny photo!" RIP, Nakao-sama 🙇♂️

8/27/2001: 22 years ago I donned the GMK Godzilla suit to learn...I don't have what it takes to be a suit actor!🥴From 192pg in "Behind the Kaiju Curtain," I detail the experience. Here are photos from the day I haven't shared, including my "epic battle" with suitmaker Shinada!
22 years ago, I took this shot of a staffer who'd brought his child to meet Godzilla. Things didn't go as planned and, well, the boy freaked out. (See pg 126 in BEHIND THE KAIJU CURTAIN.) Though the photo's been shared for years, I added mosaics as is etiquette in Japan nowadays.
8/11/2002: 21 years back - in those pre-paranoid days - I could easily bring friends to Toho. On this day, I took Bruce, one of my oldest Godzilla pals. Kitagawa-san was kind enough to wade across the big pool for a photo with my friend. Yeah, Bruce had a fab day that day. ;-)
Here are 4 shots I took at the old HMV in Shibuya 17 years back (12/11/2004) when they had the "Final Wars" set used Godzilla and Gaigan suits on display. Gaigan appears to be guarding the "good" vids!
