49 years ago today my father lost his life while we were on holiday on Sardinia. We'd both gone swimming in the sea. Unknown to us, there was a strong undercurrent. He didn't make it back. I did, just. He was 58, I was 16. I've missed him so very much.

I received a parking ticket for £100 today for parking in a car park in Cornwall on Christmas Day - for 1 hour - to visit a local church. I clearly rather naively assumed parking would be free on Christmas Day, a bank holiday. My fault. But I still feel a tad aggrieved. So there.
This striking image is Sub-Lt John Haberfield of the Royal NZ Naval Volunteer Reserve, HMS Indomitable. Six days after this photograph was taken, he was shot down and taken prisoner by the Japanese. He was murdered by being beheaded on Changi beach on July 31, 1945. He was 26.
And if you think today's #Russia is incapable of repeating this actions, think again as the people if that country itself. And also of the lands they have subsequently invaded, occupied and terrorised.
