What is work life balance? Well, it hardly ever feels balanced but it’s life. Social media makes everyone’s life look perfect but it’s not. I’m grateful for moments like these though. Cherish your loved ones and every moment you have. #MedTwitter@WomenSurgeons#womeninsurgery

1/- I took my daughter to her 18-mo peds appointment today. I haven’t been able to take her to a wellness appointment since she was 6 months old (see: #residency#fellowship). It was a weirdly special feeling being able to leave before 4 to take her.
Without going into details, I’m just going to say that the sexism and work/life “balance” issues that #WomenInMedicine and #womeninsurgery have to deal with is exhausting. It’s a miracle that we’re not quitting everyday.
I wish I could say that being a pregnant surgical resident was fine. But that wouldn’t be the whole story. And if we don’t share the whole story, how will things continue to improve?

Academic medicine can be such a dangerous environment. These stories rarely are told, and nothing will change if we don't tell them.

Graduated general surgery #residency a week ago. Don’t want to highlight anything in this tweet except that #abortion is #healthcare , pregnant people are in charge of their own bodies, and I’m sick of all this nonsense. Will use my voice to fight as much as I can ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
1/- There are speakers & then there are SPEAKERS. @jbullockruns gave @UWSurgery Grand Rounds this AM & it was incredible. Everyone in #MedEd#SurgEd needs to hear what he has to say. He’s creating identity safe learning environments in medicine. His passion & drive are INSPIRING.
3/- I paused; surprised at her comment and the implicit encouragement and kindness in her words. She went on “yes and I think sometimes we just don’t tell each other that enough. That we are proud of other women for the roles they play and the things they do.”
7/ TLDR; this quote = why we must address systemic factors leading to attrition:
“When you invest more than a decade of your life to learn a skill and you’re willing to walk away from that early in your career, that’s more than a red flag. It’s a burning fire.”
