My future wife is a nurse who works long shifts in the middle of the night to take care of really sick babies. I am working my butt off so I can train to be a brain surgeon when I finish medical school. All we want to do is help and love people. And yet we face so much hate.

My grandfather was an internal medicine physician. He didn’t plan to be a doctor, but when my grandmother said she was going to medical school, he applied too to be near her. He fiercely supported her, and she was one of the first handful of women to graduate from their school.

I am not surprised it happened. And I’m devastated that I’m not surprised. All we want is love. Such a cruel reminder how much work there is yet to do for safety and equality for LGBTQ+ people. I just want to proudly love her, safely.

He would remind me of the phrase, “Cure few, comfort all.” He said the greatest honor in being a physician was getting to be there to support someone in their most difficult moments.

Just a new intern popping in to say after day 6 of being a doctor, I’m so so grateful to all of the nurses who are constantly helping us new docs and looking out for us. So many popped into the workroom just to hype me up and give me tips. Y’all are incredible and so appreciated.

Update: I’m incredibly moved by the response this has gotten. I don’t know if there’ll be days, weeks, or months to go. Things are changing every day; deciding to go ahead with some measures and not others. But I’m grateful to have the chance to publicly honor him in this space.

I’m grateful to the former resident my grandfather trained, who has been his hospitalist during this final hospital stay, and who sat with my grandfather to do nothing in particular besides talk and comfort him.

Yesterday he made the decision to transition to comfort care. I’m so grateful for what he’s taught me, and the special connection we developed in adulthood. I’m also grateful to the dialysis techs who helped gain him a few extra months with his family.

I won’t lie, I’m scared to get the call that he’s gone. I know it’s coming soon. But I’m also so proud of him for prioritizing his comfort and values, and doing what is right for him, even when it’s hard.
