What happens when a field targets one metric while ignoring real-world concerns?

- Accepted to EMNLP! "Natural Language Decompositions of Implicit Content Enable Better Text Representations" with @styx97 @pranav__goel @psresnik This project is what I'd hoped to do when I began my PhD: a new method for computational social science arxiv.org/abs/2305.14583 1/12
- Happy to announce that I've started as a postdoctoral fellow at the @ETH_AI_Center! It's an interdisciplinary position where I'll be sitting across both NLP and social science groups. Thanks to all who helped bring me here! (yes, the photos are cherry-picked for good weather)
- Passed my defense yesterday! I am so grateful for the many people who helped me along the way, in particular my thoughtful committee @boydgraber, @AaronSchein (not pictured), @mmazurek_, Kris Miler, and of course my wonderful advisor @psresnikCongratulations to Dr. Alexander Hoyle (@miserlis_), who successfully defended his Ph.D. today! Hoyle develops computational methods to analyze latent constructs -- the vocabulary over which theory operates -- from natural language data.
- .@UofMaryland's CS dept is welcoming eight new tenure-track faculty members! With expertise in cutting-edge areas, they'll boost our academic & research capabilities. Welcome aboard! 🐢📚 Read more: go.umd.edu/Hires24
- Very pleased to have the first paper of my PhD accepted at #emnlp2020, "Improving Neural Topic Models using Knowledge Distillation"! Joint work with @Pranav__Goel (equal contribution) and @psresnik. Explanatory thread below (1/6)
- I’ll be in Singapore at #EMNLP2023 this week presenting our work! (sadly, I’ll be missing @rupak_53, who had visa issues) Please don’t hesitate to say hello! (Also, I’m on the market, so really: don’t hesitate 😁)Accepted to EMNLP! - just made the arXiv deadline, so might as well advertise! "Making the Implicit Explicit: Implicit Content as a First Class Citizen in NLP" it's *definitely* a work-in-progress but we're very excited about it so far alexanderhoyle.com/assets/pdf/Dec… w/ @rupak_53 (EQ) @pgoel @psresnik
- Very excited to be starting my summer internship in the FATE group @msftresearch this week, working with @o_saja, @narnouraf, and @hannawallach !
- @emnlpmeeting can we please move posters into a larger location? This is ridiculous
- To give advice counter to my chosen path, here's my best argument against a PhD in CS/AI: If you are good enough to get into a PhD program, you are good enough to get hired as an engineer in big tech. My math puts that at a diff of >$500k saved over 5 yrs, or >$2M in retirementAs PhD application season draws closer, a tip: Unsolicited career advice can come from a need to self-justify the advicegiver's own choices (could be accurate or cope!) Keep this in mind before taking anyone's (especially earlycareers like me) too serious! Think for yourself
- Scrolling through Twitter in bed? Put on some pants and come on down to our poster, starting at 9 am! I'll reply to this with the exact location We think there are broad applications for our framework, so there's plenty to discuss :)Accepted to EMNLP! - yes. the low quality reviews have gotten seriously out of hand the emergency review I wrote with a 24-hour turnaround for a clear reject paper is as long as all six reviews my submissions received *combined* we're putting our careers in the hands of people who don't give a shitReviewers with a large number of egregious reviewer guideline violations have to be banned from submitting to the conference venue for n years.
- Thank you for having me! It was a pleasureFor our weekly @MilaNLProc lab seminar, it was a pleasure to have @miserlis_ presenting "Social Science as a Problem Space for NLP". #NLProc
