For my latest #ConfettiWesterns column, I wrote about Long Covid, the artist David Wojnarowicz, the ephemeral Lake Manly, and the impermanence of life.
"Most days, I feel a small gust away from death."
📢 The popular drag artist Themme Fatale has announced their retirement due to Long COVID:
“That’s all folks: Live, laugh, look out for each other during a mass disabling event.”
Violet Affleck: “I contracted a post-viral condition in 2019. I'm okay now, but I saw first-hand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses. The Covid 19 pandemic has thrown into sharp relief. 1 in 10 infections leads to Long Covid.”
Violet Affleck holding it down at the LA County Board of Supervisors demanding mask availability, mask mandates in hospitals, and clean air in all government buildings including jails and detention centers. Go Violet! 😷🍉
Comedian Casey Frey shared that he likely has Long COVID today with his 2 million followers on Instagram.
“I got COVID in 2020 before tour and have been struggling with really bad neurological shit since then.”
A friend who works in healthcare has a co-worker that went to the Beyoncé concert over the weekend. The co-worker was sick all day, but didn’t test until the end of the day 🫠They saw numerous patients unmasked.
They tested positive for COVID.

This week, Solange Knowles shared diagnoses of POTS, MCAS, and Sjögren’s.
She commented a message of support on model and musician Shaun Ross’ Instagram when he spoke about his experience with Long COVID and POTS.
Nauseating to look back at this article from the original WaPo leak two weeks ago and see that the CDC was aware the science around infectiousness "has not changed" and that the guidance would be criticized by disabled people. Then, they cut public comments.
🚨NEW: After blocking public comment on their new guidance released today, the @cdc is now hiding critical comments from the public on X, many of them from disabled, immunocompromised, or #pwLongCovid. Studies & articles in opposition of the guidance were also hidden.
I'm begging the media to stop referring to the pandemic in the past tense or "behind us" when COVID-19 surges year-round and WHO leaders state we're still in a pandemic.
"Even though the pandemic may be behind us, the virus is once again surging"
How does this even make sense? Try as some might, we can't editorialize ourselves out of a pandemic. The virus will continue doing what it wants.
Today is #LongCovidAwarenessDay
This was my last solo backpacking trip before I got sick in 2020. I was 27 & walked 40 miles in two days. Now I’m lucky to make it through a half day of work.
I’ve had two surgeries & am one of millions disabled by #LongCovid#ME
Ok who did this…
Alt text: a poster spreading awareness about Long Covid featuring a photo of Shrek with different symptoms listed. “Will those who bully you about masking pay your bills when you’re to sick to work?” it reads.
This is a serious problem with numerous Long Covid studies: researchers and medical teams aren’t required to mask. It endangers and disrespects people with Long Covid.
“I’ve been tested again & I’m clear…but they keep telling me because it has to be ten days or something, I gotta keep wearing [a mask]. Don’t tell them I didn’t have it on when I walked in.”
700k+ dead on @POTUS watch, millions w/ Long Covid. Pathetic leadership.
🇺🇸 Biden expresa su molestia con tener que usar máscara de nuevo: "No paran de decirme... que tengo que seguir llevando [una máscara], pero no les digan que no la llevaba puesta cuando entré".
