It was a great honour to host the wartime President of Ukraine @ZelenskyyUa - the Lion of Kyiv - at the @LowyInstitute this evening. Thank you, Mr President.
Franklin D. Roosevelt died 75 years ago today. FDR was the most important statesman of the 20th century. He saved American democracy from the Depression, led the Allies to victory over fascism, won four consecutive presidential elections, and did all this with a broken body.
🇮🇳 External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar & I are both cricket fans & the similarities between cricket & diplomacy came up several times in our on-stage conversation at @LowyInstitute.
At the dinner afterwards I think I got a bit carried away with the subject.
I have always been a believer in the United States. But the past 24 hours - the incredible amateurishness of the Democrats in Iowa and the grotesque circus of the #SOTU, complete with Space Force references and Rush Limbaugh’s bad acting - have shaken that belief. So dispiriting.
‘The genius of America’s conduct after WWII lay in the fact that Washington established “hegemony by consent.” But if you push your allies to the brink in every negotiation, and present your ugliest face to the world, then this consent will evaporate.’
I hope that this generation of Americans keeps its rendezvous. I am sorry they will receive no succour or inspiration from a president who is so unworthy of the great office he holds.
‘8 days into his tenure, Biden has not occupied my every waking thought..He has not insulted anyone. He has not played golf instead of working, or held counselling sessions with cable-TV anchors, or caused a rupture in our relationship with Australia.’
Thanks to Finland’s PM @MarinSanna for giving a powerful speech to the @LowyInstitute and for demonstrating great sisu, as well as good humour, in our conversation afterwards. And happy Independence Day next Tuesday!

‘There is a mysterious cycle in human events,’ FDR believed. ‘To some generations much is given. Of other generations much is expected. This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.’
