The Minneapolis Police Department's record of racism and police brutality has a long history. In 1945, Minneapolis mayor Hubert Humphrey tried to reform the MPD through "education." Here's a pamphlet sent to the entire MPD in 1946 encouraging police to "discuss" race. (thread) 1/

Am I right that there are ZERO tenure-track jobs open in 20th c. US history, ONE job in 20th c. US in the world, and just a few jobs in 20th c. US Black & Latinx history?! While the future demands a historical perspective, it seems there will be fewer historians to offer one.

Some personal news: I've signed a contract with Grove/Atlantic for my next book, a reexamination of the War on Terror as a thirty-year epoch (from 1993-2023) that remade American power at home and abroad. I'm thrilled to be working with George Gibson and everyone @groveatlantic.

Perhaps obvious, but the defense budget regularly passes with large bipartisan support because it sustains a political economy that creates jobs for voters across party lines, liberals and conservatives. 8 of the top 10 states in defense spending went for Joe Biden in 2020.

Amazing that anyone would think a new Cold War with China would be a national unifying project—one that would rely upon military personnel who comprise 1% of total population—given the political response to a global pandemic that has cost the lives of over 800,000 Americans.
