A little news: next week is my final one at WAMU, after seven and a half years doing local journalism here.
I have loved the chance to report on my own community, and am grateful so many of you have trusted me to listen to your stories.
People gathering at Lafayette Square.
I can see what I assume are Secret Service on the White House roof. More police presence in the park—probably about 20 that I can see.
I’d guess more than a hundred students have walked out of HB Woodlawn in Arlington in protest of a proposed state policy restricting trans rights. These students join the 1000+ who’ve walked out across Virginia so far today.
D.C.-area leaders have been warning about capacity issues at DCA for years. This from the two Virginia senators last year, after the first of two near-misses at the busy airport.
WATCH: @SenTimKaine and I are on the Senate floor now talking about the near-miss crash on the tarmac at DCA yesterday… and why the lawmakers trying to force more flights into this already packed airport are endangering the flying public. x.com/i/broadcasts/1…
Hard to understate the significance here. Scott will likely be the first Black speaker of the House of Delegates, the first democratically-elected legislative body in America. That history dates to 1619, also the year the first enslaved Black people arrived in Virginia.
Hello fellow hiker kids! For a fun little @DCist story, I’m rounding up some favorite lesser-known trails in the region. What are your deeper-cut adventures in Virginia and Maryland?
Here are some snaps from a few of mine for inspiration ✨
It’s...a professional news tweet! I’m starting a new adventure at @wamu885 & @DCist: as the Northern Virginia beat reporter.
That means: local politics & policy, the gubernatorial race as it relates to our region, schools...lots of important, fascinating things.
It's ... a "some personal news" tweet!
I'm excited and humbled to say that I'm joining the @wamu885 newsroom permanently as a reporter.
And, because I'm not about to let a life moment go by and not thank the people who made it possible, here's a thread:
As dark falls on Capitol and the 6 pm curfew nears, the police are moving the crowd down the steps. Seeing flashbangs and columns of tear gas. Surreal to see a plume if it in front of this building.
Just interviewed a history teacher who had a big egg on his head from what he said was a police baton. Also had big bruises on legs from what he thought were rubber bullets.
Said “We’re out here tonight, and we’re going to be out here every night.”
