"I love remote work but I miss the serendipitous moments in the office when I caught up with a coworker while getting coffee and had a breakthrough."
Okay, let's talk about this. Starting with:
Those weren't truly serendipitous moments 👇
Remote work opens the option for nomad life, but it also adds the option for the exact opposite... Settling down.
Instead of constantly moving for the best job offer you can:
• Stay
• Put down roots
• Build closer connections
• Get involved in your community
Last week I went to put in my notice at my full-time job and came out with an "entrepreneurial leave".
I'm honestly still stunned. Here's what happened:
If you look at teams that have successfully worked remotely since pre-pandemic, you'll notice a couple things:
• None use surveillance software
• All ended any hybrid work experiments
• All do team retreats
• None have a heavy meeting culture
Take a note from their playbook
Reminder: Your best ideas don't come from working non-stop.
The best ideas come when you take a shower, go for a walk, sleep, etc.
Rest is not the opposite of work. It's an integral piece of great work.
I run a successful company while:
• Waking up without an alarm
• Only having 2 meeting days per week
• Working a 4-day workweek
Let's end the story you have to subscribe to hustle culture to be professionally successful. AMA.
Reminder: Everyone doesn't work best at the same times
How much genius have we been missing out on by trying to force people into a 9-5 box for a century?
A company new to remote work asked for advice on extending expected work hours from 9-5 to 8-6 (with no salary increase).
Their argument: "They no longer commute so they should use that time for work." 🙄
I love what I do but dealing with this kind of thinking drives me crazy
Almost 10 years ago, I flipped off a skateboard and landed on my head on concrete. I ended up with a concussion and completely lost my ability to focus. Here's a thread on how I went from zero concentration to the most disciplined person most people know:
⬇️
Hot take: Daily standups are outdated and ineffective
They frequently:
• Go on too long
• Are too frequent
• Include people that shouldn't be there
• End up wasting everyone's time with no benefit.
Huge red flag because there are much better ways to get status updates
