I travelled the world in search of LGBTQ couples of color. The experience changed my life, but I did it because I think their stories can change your life too. In honor of Black History Month, I'm proud to announce that my book, Queer Love in Color, is available for preorder.

An AirBnB accused me of stealing a laptop from her home. It’s offensive for a lot of reasons, but mostly because she accused me of stealing a Dell.

Today I interviewed an LGBT elder activist. I asked her how she felt about Pride month and she said, “It’s weird. Whenever I go to the Parade, I notice how few gay man in their 50s-70s are there. We lost so much of that generation and I feel that void every day.”

My sister is planning to take her teen daughter to Paris. She said, “I need to make sure she sees the world so she’s not impressed when one of these little men try to take her on a trip to Miami.”

Today is my rage quit anniversary. 3 years ago, I was late to work b/c a man set off a bomb in the subway. Most of my team hadn’t arrived when I got in, but my boss YELLED at me anyway. I let her finish, smiled, then told her I quit b/c I was starting a job at The New York Times

I called my doctor and told her that my pharmacy tried to charge me $2100 for PrEP. She swiftly said, “Bro that’s fucked up,” put me on hold for a few minutes and then told me she “fixed it.” I love a black doctor’s office lol

Yesterday, I went to interview a gay, black couple that’s been together for 41 years. They’re 83 and 82-years-old. We were supposed to chat for 90 minutes but I ended up staying for 7 hours. I’m deeply impacted.

This old black lady saw me reading on the subway and gave me that smile that old black ladies give when they see young black men reading, and then walked over and handed me the bookmark out of her book when she noticed that I was using an old Doordash receipt as a bookmark.

When considering journalism’s role in moments like this, I always come back to this photo. Richard Cohen, the man who took this photograph, won a Pulitzer. Edward Crawford, the young man photographed here, died suspiciously two years later.

I would like to read work by a food reporter who grew up on food stamps, who could never afford to eat at restaurants that require reservations, who knows what it’s like to turn $20 into 5 days worth of meals.

Some moments in pop culture help you clarify things about yourself. Tonight, I realized…I love mess. I really do.

Mike, 72, and Phil, 76, met in church 49 years ago. “I wore my hot red pants,” Mike, left, said. Then he laughed. Mischievously. “They worked every time.” “They did,” Phil said. “And I’m glad I was there to calm you down.” Michael + Phillip, Detroit, MI, 7/11/19
