My daughter works at a bookstore. She was helping an older woman choose books today. As they passed my book, the woman leaned in & said: “Oh my daughter loves Heather O’Neill, but I do not. I’m whispering because this is her neighborhood and someone in the store might know her.”

I don’t care what anyone says, living alone as a woman is one of the most perfectly luxurious experiences of my life.

If you have sex with someone knowing full well it is going to be a one time thing, but the other person believes they are embarking on a relationship, I don’t think you can really consider the sex consensual. (Although this opinion gets me into trouble at dinner parties.)

I had to wait in line awhile at the corner store. When I got to the cash, the man behind the counter apologized. “I decided not to cut anybody off and just let them talk. It’s Christmas Eve and I might be the only person they talk to today. Tiny pleasures.” Tiny pleasures indeed.

Because my daughter works at a children’s bookstore, when we walk down the street, little kids stop in their tracks and stare at her like she’s a celebrity. They can’t believe the woman who helps them choose books is out in the world doing ordinary things. It’s quite adorable.

When I look out the window in Montreal to see what a strange noise is, I am rarely disappointed.

When I buy a book, I either begin to read it that day, or in seven years. There’s no in between.

Someone stuck googly eyes on the statue of this lion. And it’s really changed his whole vibe.
