I am thrilled to share that I'm not quitting my job at Stanford and joining another university for the 8th year in a row. I'm on a streak!

I am honored to have been named to this award. But it was really won by my students & postdocs. I feel so lucky to have the chance to work with such a great set of people over my career. I’m not done yet as it is super fun to watch students develop and grow into great leaders.

Thoughts on the @OpenAI drama. Yet another reason we need academic AI centers like @StanfordHAI—we can’t leave the important issues in AI to industry players who have conflicting values they can’t manage—as the outcome here shows, money wins in industry rather than good ideas.

.@StevenZapata makes an impassioned argument for ethical use of artists work in generative AI models. Stealing people’s livelihoods. Open source is propagating these problems instead of protecting them-“poisonous trees that are only going to produce poisoned fruit.”

So proud of @mitchellgordon and his brilliant PhD defense talk on “Human-AI Interaction Under Societal Disagreement”. Great lead advising by @msbernst! Excellent example of human-centered AI research for @StanfordHAI. On to his faculty position @MITEECS! Congrats!

“Moreover, he says, it [ML] is the first engineering field that is humancentric, focused on the interface between people and technology.” I work in an interdisciplinary engineering field: human-computer interaction. It’s pretty human-centric. ML is not.

#chi2022 should probably track how many people caught COVID there... we've had a lot of cases that I've seen (I'm stuck here waiting it out). I suspect hundreds got it...

I need to always remember that it is nice when faculty respond to email from prospective students. #cleaninggarage@bradamyers⁩ ⁦@cmuhcii

Yesterday, I was proud to see the strong PhD defense of @ParastooAbtahi. She completed a brilliant PhD on "From Haptic Illusions to Beyond-Real Interactions in Virtual Reality". Parastoo started working with me and @dSeanMustard in Mechanical Engineering 6 years ago. 1/5

As promised, we spoke to artists who are impacted by Generative AI (including @kortizart). We've added a session with Rebecca Blake, a designer who is an advocate with @GAguild, & designer/illustrator @StevenZapata
