    I know this is confusing because being from New York is supposed to mean that you’re rich, but private schools in fact offer financial aid. I grew up with a single mom w/o health insurance, and we got food stamps for a while when money was really tight.

    I certainly can’t blame anyone for being annoyed by a project founded by Harvard kids, but I hope the work we publish (by writers from around the country and world, and with a wide range of backgrounds, who cold pitch us) speaks for itself. That’s what our magazine is about.

    I really hesitated to weigh in here because the lit world deserves all the elitism critiques that it gets, and then some. But that’s all the more reason that transparency is key, and simplistic assumptions like this one are unhelpful.
