Professor of International Law & Security, University of Copenhagen, Centre for Military Studies. Former Special Advisor on War Crimes to the ICC Prosecutor.
I am delighted to have just signed a contract with @CambridgeUP to publish a short book entitled "The Vietnam War, Environmental Destruction, and International Law."
Let's be clear: Israel's attack on Iran is not simply a violation of the UN Charter. It is a manifest violation of it. Few acts are more unequivocally illegal than preventive (non-imminent) self-defence. So Israel's attack is both unlawful and criminal -- the crime of aggression.
To no one's surprise, the #ICJ judge who announced that God wanted her to stand with Israel is the only judge who voted against a number of obligations the other 10 judges found applicable to Israel.
PRESS RELEASE: The #ICJ delivers its Advisory Opinion on the Obligations of Israel in relation to the Presence and Activities of the United Nations, Other International Organizations and Third States in and in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory go.icj-cij.org/43lWwyk
1. Take some time to read about the shocking and disappointing events at @UTLaw. A hiring committee unanimously chose @ValentinaAzarov over nearly 10 others to run the schoolโs justly-celebrated international human rights program.
The idea that ensuring multimillionaires get treated fairly by the legal system will help illegally imprisoned asylum seekers should be called the โtrickle down theory of human rights.โ #NovakDjokovic
I would love to see that textbook, because Israel is literally the only country in the world that has consistently claimed this kind of preventive self-defence is legal. Not even the US goes that far (with a couple of minor hiccups in 2002 and 2006).
Itโs preemptive because itโs preempting the acquisition of nuclear weapons by a hostile regime. Thatโs not aggression. Thatโs textbook self-defense.
Some exciting personal news: I have just been appointed Professor of International Law and Security at the University of Copenhagen. Iโll be based in the Centre for Military Studies, but I will also get to work with all my friends @iCourts_jur.
Your friendly reminder that the US recognised Kosovo as a state the day after it declared independence from Serbia, at a time when Kosovo did not come close to satisfying the Montevideo requirements for statehood.
The ambassador also stated that โPalestinians as a group have not met the qualifications for statehoodโ in responding to question about expanded recognition of Palestinian statehood
I am really honoured and delighted to report that @KarimKhanQC has appointed me his Special Adviser for International Criminal Law Discourse. More to say about my portfolio soon! You can see the entire list of new Special Advisers here. icc-cpi.int/Pages/item.aspโฆ@IntlCrimCourt
Three independent judges -- from France, Slovenia, and Benin -- have unanimously decided, based on the evidence (which critics haven't seen), that there are reasonable grounds to issue the warrants on all of the charges other than extermination. This claim is precisely backward.
This is simply false. As has been reported by both @lemonde and @MiddleEastEye, the Office of the Prosecutor began working on the arrest-warrant applications for Netanyahu and Gallant long before there were any accusations against the Prosecutor.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin @netanyahu: International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Karim Khan chose to "hit the Jews" when he faced sexual misconduct allegations.
