“3 days into Covid.” So thankful for the frontline workers who give tirelessly in the fight against Covid. This community paramedic gave me the monoclonal antibody in my home tonite. It made me reflect again on the blessings of science and human kindness. Life is precious.

- Inpatient rounds in covid era: I don’t mind masks or eye coverings or gloves or gowns..I miss the freedom to sit on the patient’s bed, with the family, and fully discuss our plans for care. The human connection is strained and the patient is lonely and afraid. Life is precious...
- The Preventive Cardiology Staff dared me to wear a football jersey and football shoes to clinic today. Show a little spirit they said! Here’s my response!
- I like that quote-"life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the number of moments that take your breath away." On in-patient rounds today 1 of our patients uttered the magical words, "Thanks so much for taking care of me." Each time I hear it I'm breathless.
- Beginning the New Year with a quote from a 12 yr old boy who was dying from complications of AIDS...”do all you can do, with who you are, wherever you are, for whatever time you have...to help others...” his courage can fuel my actions for patients and families in 2019.
- On my way to work, a very busy clinic day, I paused to take in this sky…and it stopped me in my tracks…to consider how fortunate I am to have a life in medicine where the privilege of caring for others is realized every day. Life is precious…nature is beautiful.
- Great quote that Andrew Cuomo offered today when considering 1st responders to Covid-19; “Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.” FD Roosevelt. As I watch health care teams go to work each day, I’m in awe.
- What's the best cardiac test prior to non-cardiac surgery? A great history, physical exam and ECG review! What's the best test to get if a patient has mild troponin release after non-cardiac surgery? YES!!-a great history, physical exam and ECG review. We've come so far...!@#
- Professor Kim Williams offered a nice notion about mentoring over dinner at ACC19. He said your goal is to help your mentees achieve a career "GTY". I asked what that meant...he said "Greater Than Yours". Mentoring is a privilege...and this adds a nice perspective.
- The non financial rewards of a life in medicine are priceless. This note from an 8 yr old grandchild of 1 of my patients brought me to tears. How fortunate we are to have the privilege of helping Grandfather’s reach their 78th birthday with their Grandchildren! Life is precious.
- Morning glow on my way to clinic. Lots of emotions today. One of my best friends, a Cardiologist in Italy, is hospitalized with Covid-19. Now I understand what people in law enforcement and the military feel like when they go to work knowing that they could be in harms way.
- I went fishing this morning off the tip of the island...I didn’t catch a fish but I captured a sunrise! I love a professional life in medicine, but it is such a blessing to step back and recharge...Life is precious!
- People ask me about University of Michigan. I tell them that it’s not about the football…it’s about the University and its family (that I’ve been a part of for 26 years). Those foundational aspirations…”to teach, to give, to discover”…But I do admit…the family likes to win!
- As the sun sets on 2021, so much to reflect on. Thankful for faith, family, friends, nature, health & the privilege of serving UMich & the ACC. Hoping that for all of us, we can find the collective will to overcome Covid and the various forces that divide us. Life is precious.
