I’ve reported on infectious diseases for 15 years, but during the covid-19 pandemic and even more during the global outbreak of mpox clade IIb, I was shocked by the amount of misinformation I was seeing. Misinfo had always been part of any outbreak, but this felt different.

Here’s the entire clip of @VanJones68. It’s beautiful and heartfelt, it will always be how I remember this moment and it made me uglycry 🤷‍♂️

So sad to hear that Paul Alexander passed yesterday at age 78 from Covid-19. Paul contracted polio in 1952, when he was just six years old. He ended up in an iron lung and while he could live outside it for extended periods of time he never really left it.

I’m so tired of this but I’ll say it once more: If #omicron turns out to be as dangerous as it well might and we once again do little to prepare for it with the time we have, then we are compounding the biggest collective political failure I have witnessed in my lifetime.

Fuck you and your ahistorical, despicable, cynical bullshit. If you ever come to Germany I am happy to give you a tour of a few concentration camps and talk about the role spineless careerists played in the propaganda that led to the horror of the Holocaust. Signed: Germany
Fox host Lara Logan says that people tell her that Dr. Fauci doesn't represent science, but represents Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor known as the "Angel of Death" for performing medical experiments at Auschwitz: "I am talking about people all across the world are saying this"

My plan for beating #covid19 after watching this pandemic for one year? Easy: Test like a Korean, track and trace like a Singaporean, sequence like a Brit, crush the curve like a New Zealander, vaccinate like an Israeli - and behave like a human being...

Angela Merkel this morning in parliament: “Lies and misinformation, conspiracy and hate do not only harm our democratic debate, they also hamper our fight against the virus.”

For me and for everyone I know who has been following #covid19, the last few days have felt like a profound shift in the epidemic. We are clearly entering a new phase. And since I've had some time to digest recent news, here is a short thread about that „window of opportunity“

We have the knowledge. We have the vaccines. We have the money. Germany should not be in the situation it is in two years into this pandemic. What we lack is evidence-based politics. What we lack is social medicine. What we lack is empathy.

One of the things I love about my job is that I learn so many new things with every story. That was particularly true in my reporting for this story about #covid19 clusters and susperspreading events. Read it here and/or bear with me for a thread... sciencemag.org/news/2020/05/w…

Once again I am watching researchers scramble to understand a virus spreading and am getting a sinking feeling in my stomach as I watch new information come in… So a #monkeypox thread on worries and whys

#Omicron is spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous variant”, says @DrTedros in @WHO presser on #covid19. “We're concerned that people are dismissing Omicron as mild. Surely we have learned by now that we underestimate this virus at our peril."

Unsurprisingly, there is a sense of relief today across the political spectrum in Germany and I thought I’d give you a flavor of sentiments here:

Going by what we know so far, places like Germany or the US are in for a world of trouble in the coming weeks.
So I want to make a few general points here once that go beyond the science (will do the rest later):
