In the @WSJ today, I review Brink Lindsey's "The Permanent Problem" which argues that capitalism has failed to bring "spirtual riches." Lindsey misunderstands what an economic system is for, and his "solutions" would make us materially poorer.

It looks like a whole new shipping preference law is coming. The House overwhelmingly passed the American Cargo for American Ships Act that would require 100% of transportation project materials to go on US ships, driving up infrastructure costs.

Many commentators on Trump v US, including the dissents, are acting like criminal prosecutions of former presidents are a very important check on abuse of power. The fact that we’re seeing the first ones in our history right now show they’re clearly not.

The Grants Pass decision by Gorsuch, restoring Western cities' right to ban street camping, is a strong repudiation of everything the 9th Circuit has said about homelessness over 6 years. It's a shame so many cities had to suffer for this foolishness. supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf…

This tweet wonderfully shows many progressives’ and even some excited conservatives’ confusion about the Loper-Bright case. Congress can still write a law that says “regulate tank cars generally” and agencies can then do what they want. Congress just has to SAY it.

The encounter of citizens of socialist countries with supermarkets actually was transformative, and it was not just Yeltsin. Socialism justified itself as a path to economic abundance for the masses, and when Western stores proved that was a lie they felt betrayed. A thread/

Honestly I wish Americans wouldn’t feel so smug about the Yeltsin supermarket story. Consumer abundance had been a staple of our Cold War propaganda going back to the Kitchen Debate in 1959. Russians knew we had that advantage. But it wasn’t quite so simple. /1

I don't want to trigger anybody, but the OECD housing ranking of total affordability, size, and quality metrics has US at # 1. One can quibble about plenty, but this is not an unimportant fact. If your mental model has the US as an outlier the other way, it needs to be adjusted.

It's amazing to me that @politico attacks the pause on Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grants by citing the "detailed work plans" submitted by the nonprofit winners. The Climate United Fund received $7 billion, the biggest nonprofit grant in history, in exchange for a 49-page plan.
