🎁 That's a wrap. Not just on the presidential campaign, but also my next book. I just sent it off to my editor at @simonschuster. 80,000+ words. Some wrap up work to come in the next few weeks and then months of editing pre-sale and then marketing. Tentative on-sale date: 9/9/25

Admissions dean at a highly selective college: "I didn't realize how much testing was a deterrent to applying until we were forced to go test optional. It was eye-opening."

After 22 months of reporting and writing, I delivered some 75,000 words today to my editor. Some wrap up work to come in next few weeks and lots of editing ahead. But past this major milestone. Look for it August 2020 from @ScribnerBooks #amwriting

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt stripped the four-year degree requirement from information technology and sales positions last summer. Now, 11% of applicants who make it through the interview process for sales positions have no credential beyond HS diploma. hechingerreport.org/what-if-we-hir…

When we talk about campuses we tend to discuss faculty/students, but rarely staff -- 1/2 of those who work in #highered. Perhaps "staff" is amorphous term. But this fall, the divide b/w faculty/staff might be wider than ever. My latest for @TheAtlantic

Just talked to parent with 2 kids in private colleges — one at top research u. and other at a small regional. I asked about differences in remote learning. He finds regional college trying so much harder than prestigious u. These perceptions will matter if we’re online in fall.

A moment is coming soon that will expose a divide in #highered. It will be between presidents who worry more about public health and students despite the financial risks vs. presidents who want to open at all costs.

We need to stop talking about this as college vs not college. It’s clear all jobs require some sort of post-HS education, so perhaps we need a new nomenclature to describe these multiple pathways & make them ALL appealing?

Just seeing how teenagers treat this virus in small groups and how little they follow any rules this summer, makes me think we’ll be lucky to make it through a month on campuses this fall.

We so often talk about college debt held by students, but we don't enough talk about inter-generational debt that colleges are saddling parents with. This is incredible work and a must read on Parent PLUS loans by @anfuller @JMitchellWSJ. wsj.com/articles/which…

Remember the Thiel fellows—the $100,000 Peter offered to each of them to leave college to pursue their start-up dreams? Well, it seems one of them had their payday yesterday when Adobe paid $20B for Figma.
