Why do buildings fall down? In “The Water Will Come,” I wrote about the dangerous combination in Miami of cheap building, salt water, and lax enforcement of building codes.
Barrier islands are, in a geological sense, temporary arrangements of sand. To imagine them as places with any permanence at all is to misunderstand how the Earth works.
This does not happen to writers like me. But it just did. Just learned that The Heat Will Kill You First is number 6 on the NYT best-seller list this week.
Insane, inhuman, racist, but not at all surprsing. Florida state Senate passing a bill *ensuring* that the heat will kill outdoor workers. This is 19th century stuff, as barbaric as kids working in coal mines.
28-11: The Florida state Senate passes a bill to remove local governments' authority to adopt heat standards, such as guaranteed shade and rest breaks, for workers.
The bill would make all local heat protections “void and prohibited.”
Today would be a good day for Taylor to say a few words to her zillions of fans about the risks of life on a fast-warming planet and why we need to stop burning fossil fuels.
As much as some may disagree, today’s postponement was very much necessary for the safety of everyone, Taylor included, you can see just how much the heat was getting to her after yesterday’s show and doing that again would have not been a good idea.
And in 1979, when Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House, marking the beginning of the clean energy revolution, China was basically an agrarian society. This is what decades of obscene fossil fuel subsidies and weak political leadership has done for the US.
“In 2014, China sold 75,000 EVs and hybrids, and exported 533,000 cars. Fast forward to 2024, and China sells more EVs than any other country, with 9.5 million cars delivered last year. . It also controls the majority of the battery supply chain.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
At virtually every public talk I've ever given, someone asks -- often in an aggressive if not hostile tone -- why I don't single out overpopulation as one of the main drivers of the climate crisis.
NOAA's role in providing clear, accurate data about the speed and scale of the global climate crisis is exactly why Trump's Project 2025 aims to dismantle the agency.

#Tampa listen up. If the forecast holds, #Milton would be a hurricane that nobody on the west coast of #Florida has ever experienced. Massive storm surge & extreme winds. The threat to life & property is immense. You have a couple of short days to prepare & evacuate if needed.
