Two things happened on the @California_ISO grid last night.
1) Battery storage discharge went over 6GW for the
first time
AND
2) Batteries were the largest source of supply.

- Battery storage passed nuclear for the first time on @California_ISO grid.
- Zero Carbon sources provided 71% of the electricity in Texas yesterday...
- Renewables are currently providing 153% of load on @California_ISO grid. Insane. gridstatus.io/live/caiso?dat…
- The @CAgovernor office has announced that the state of CA has exceeded 10GW of energy storage. Will be interesting to see a breakdown of this between @California_ISO, other areas not served by CAISO and behind-the-meter storage. @CalEnergy
- The latest in a series of battery discharge records occurred on @California_ISO grid last night. Battery discharge hit an all time high - 6.5 GW - at 8:40 PM. Note that gas usage at this time was under 2GW. A separate record was set as discharge reached 28% of load. 🧵
- Battery discharge passed 1,000 MW on @California_ISO for the first time yesterday.
- A 1 GW coal plant was shut down in Virginia at the end of May. Also a 800 MW oil-fired unit. The transition continues. spglobal.com/marketintellig…
- So - it looks like this battery storage thingy might actually be working. About 4,500 MWh on @California_ISO between 5:30 - 10:30 pm yesterday. Steady discharge above 1,000 MW for 3 hours
- It looks like having battery storage as the top supply source for a few early evening hours will become common for shoulder months on @California_ISO grid going forward. Happened again last night from 6:45pm - 8:25pm. gridstatus.io/graph/fuel-mix…
- Storage on @California_ISO has now officially passed 6GW. I think once storage gets into 8-10 GW range CA can begin to retire some of the very old, lightly used NG plants that are being kept open. Note: Last October = 4,471 MW.
- New record for solar on @California_iso today as it crosses 19GW for the first time! 19,122 MW at 12:30 pm Note: the CA grid passed 14GW for the first time in May 2022. So 5GW of growth in about 2 years. Thanks to @grid_status for info. gridstatus.io/records/caiso?…
- Texas grid - @ERCOT_ISO - set a new solar record today - 19,105 MW - see below. 1) This is over 6,000 MW more than the record last year at this time. Nice! 2) @California_ISO grid set its own new solar record yesterday - 18,916MW. 3) @ERCOT_ISO gets to 19GW first.
- April ends with another battery discharge record on @California_ISO as it goes over 7GW for the first time = 7,046 MW. Nice. Note: two years ago on May 7, 2022 the record = 1,753 MW. gridstatus.io/records/caiso?…
