Totally thrilled and humbled to have won the Maria Moors Cabot Prize for journalism. It's been a rocky road of 21 years, 1000+ stories, three books, stress, adrenaline, and covering too much bloodshed, tears, beauty and heroism. This recognition means a million dollars to me.

Narcos have long worn military fatigues but the numbers and weaponry of these Cartel Jalisco New Generation troops is beyond nuts. This is why we cannot understand them as just criminals - when they so resemble a paramilitary or guerrilla force -

The Detention of El Mayo - A Thread The arrest in the US of Mayo Zambada, such a huge figure in the Mexican narco world, was a truly seismic event. Two explanations emerged: 1) La Traición, or treachery: The son of El Chapo betrayed Mayo. 2) El Pacto: Mayo made a deal. 1/

I spent the last 3 days following the crime beat - or nota roja - in Culiacán, Sinaloa to better understand the Mayo-Chapitos war on the ground. It's brutal and tragic, and its unprecedented how the cartel war has paralyzed a major city for a week. Full story coming very soon.

HISTORIC NARCO EXTRADITIONS A total of 29 narcos are being extradited from Mexico to US today former DEA agent Mike Vigil tells me. (Some say more). "This is the highest number of extraditions in the history of Mexico, without question. This is historic. It's a very bold move."
