    This week we saw a win for encryption when the #ECHR ruled that forcing @telegram to decrypt user messages was against the essence of the right to a private life. This recognizes that weakening encryption for some weakens privacy rights for all of us—which violates ECHR law.

    Way back in 1995 Secure Sockets Layer (#SSL) was introduced by #Netscape to provide authentication for a website and enable an encrypted connection. Today SSL has been replaced by Transport Layer Security (#TLS) #InternetHistory #Encryption

    The Internet remains our best hope to communicate among the peoples of the world.
    Cutting a whole population off the Internet will stop disinformation coming from that population—but it also stops the flow of truth.
    People invaded by a foreign power deserve the Internet. But we cannot be selective about who has access.
    We must never waver from this vision. The Internet is for everyone.

    The “@” symbol was first used to signify that a message was being sent to a person - like your name on a letter. It was coined by Ray Tomlinson (US programmer) who invented the email system. Although we will never know what the message contained.  #InternetHistory
