Hear me out: trees, chairs, restaurants, micro-playgrounds. Cities need space for people, and the only space that we're not using efficiently is the street.
Rode this Teslas-in-tunnels system in Las Vegas just last week. The purpose of the changing lights is to help you not notice the incredibly low capacity, multiple stops, and the general feeling of driving around endlessly inside a parking structure. @boringcompany
Here is the @boringcompany Las Vegas Loop going just as hard as it can. After an hour, itβs moved a little over 1000 people, a tiny fraction of what real public transit can do with this kind of infrastructure.
One-hour timelapse (60x speed) of Central Station during @SEMASHOW. This is one of eight (soon to be 14!) Loop Stations which operated at this awesome @LVCVA event. On the day shown, Vegas Loop safely transported 29,755 passengers.
Remember, everyone, the problem that good public transit solves is the efficient use of space, not just the efficient use of labor. Self driving cars are still cars, the most space-wasting form of transport ever invented.
End of year hot take:
Cancel all new train funding!
We have cars that drive themselves.
You can call a robot car in several cities across America- this isnβt science fiction anymore!
Trains just donβt make sense in a world of autonomous vehicles
In cities, @elonmusk's hatred of sharing space with strangers is a luxury (or pathology) that only the rich can afford. Letting him design cities is the essence of elite projection. humantransit.org/2017/07/the-daβ¦
Europe *looks* wealthier than America because more of its wealth is in public, where it benefits everyone. Parks, public transit, civic infrastructure etc etc. Fewer giant mansions and private hunting estates, because the rich pay high taxes. Itβs a choice.
Great example of how Euros do have lower incomes and lower consumption.
People look at a picture of Europe and say "this can't be poorer than Mississippi."
But people in Mississippi actually CONSUME far more.
They have big fridge, crew-cab, A/C, ATV, etc.
