My book "The Spy in the Archive: How one man tried to kill the KGB" is out today in the US and I'm so pleased to see this review in the New York Times. "What makes Corera’s book original is that he shows the U.S.S.R.’s demise from the vantage point of its security services."

NEW - Russian commanders have been killed after they felt they had to move closer to the front lines, western officials say. Deputy Commander of the 41st combined arms Army killed by sniper fire. A divisional commander and a regimental commander also killed.

Breaking - CIA chief Mike Pompeo tells the BBC he expects Russia to try and interfere in US mid term elections later this year. He tells me he hasn't seen a significant decrease in its subversive activity in Europe or the US.

Russian commanders moving further forward to get more control and impetus behind operations which have, in some cases, badly stalled. Those commanders are trying to impose their own personality on the battlefield but this in turn, is placing them at greater risk, w. officials say

Fragilities in systems,combined with remarkable Ukrainian resistance,has shocked Russian commanders, western officials say, and is having a psychological impact on Russian troops because of ferocity of the fight. But for all the problems, they are likely to adapt,say w. officials

New-Russian Lt. Colonel captured by Ukrainians, a Western official confirms.“In the area in which he was captured, there was a significant amount of electronic warfare equipment. It's unclear whether he was personally connected with that, but it's something we're looking into”

Farewell to one of the most important spies of the Cold War. Oleg Gordievsky has died. A KGB officer who spied for MI6, he supplied vital intelligence that helped manage tensions between the West and the Soviet Union in the 80s. Nothing suspicious to his passing, I understand

Just as Russia's military plans have faltered, so have some of the FSB's plans for covert action and political change. And just as military is moving to more indiscriminate attacks, there are concerns that occupation of cities will see heavier repression. bbc.co.uk/news/live/worl…

New - 10,000 Russians killed is a ‘reasonable estimate’, a western official says. The figure briefly appeared on a pro-Kremlim website, possibly after being hacked, before being quickly deleted. The official added this would mean a further 30-40,000 wounded or incapacitated

Breaking - Dutch intelligence (with help of British) disrupted a Russian GRU cyber operation targeting OPCW on April 13th. Four Russian intelligence officers escorted out of country.

The official said it was ‘remarkable’ that Hostomel airport was still being fought over when it was a Day 1 objective for Russian forces. They still expect Russian forces to try and edge towards the capital but Ukrainian forces are doing ‘well’ to take small towns back

Overall, six Russian Generals are now thought to have been killed, the most senior is a Lt General who was commander of the 8th Combined Arms Army. All six will have been replaced, the western official says.
