The result was Gmail. He didn’t just fix the email. He redefined it. - Used JavaScript in a radical new way – now called AJAX - Grouped messages into threads - Added search - Gave users 1GB of free storage (500x what others gave) Basically, email with Google DNA.

At the time, the overall email system was broken. - Hotmail and Yahoo gave you 2-4 MB of storage. - Webmail was slow. Clicking anything refreshed the whole page. - ‘Search’ didn’t exist. :) - Deleting emails was a daily ritual to make space.

Gmail didn’t even have enough infrastructure to support a public launch. It ran on 300 discarded Pentium III machines. The rollout was invite-only. But that scarcity amplified demand.

Internally, Gmail was codenamed Caribou, a Dilbert reference to projects that never launched. It stayed secret, even inside Google, for years. The first users were the Google employees. They used it internally for over 2 years before launch. Then came April 1st, 2004.

Gmail went public. The launch sounded like a joke: A free email app with 1GB storage from a company known for April Fool’s stunts? Even the press didn’t believe it. But it was real – and it spread like wildfire.
