Our hearts are heavy with today's news that Phillip Dabney has passed away. Mr. Dabney started in our dining hall at age 16 as an unpaid helper in 1952, and then as a full-time staff member from 1954 until his retirement in 2017 after 65 years of service to our cadets.

Ten weeks ago we began in-person classes, our sports teams practiced for the fall season, and we instituted strict protocols to guard against COVID-19. Now, students are learning, teams competing, and we’ve had zero cases identified on campus. We pray this success continues.

Today, Larry Elder, who has attended Fork Union since 6th grade, a company commander for the past two years, graduated as a senior in May 2019, and returned as a postgraduate football player, was promoted to Cadet Colonel. Congratulations! youtu.be/aqfLcsh7I8g

The campus is emptying for Thanksgiving leave after our cadets have persevered through more than 100 days without a break under strict pandemic protocols. And now, we can celebrate a truly extraordinary accomplishment: We have had ZERO cases of COVID-19 on our campus this year.

How do you become the highest paid wide receiver in NFL history? By putting in hard work when you could be doing something else instead, showing the grit & discipline required to excel. Congratulations, Mike Thomas (FUMA Class of 2012). @Cantguardmike #grindnowshinelater

Phillip O. Dabney, a FUMA employee for 65 years, was laid to rest Tuesday. The church was full of family and friends who'd been touched by his life, and even the overflow rooms were standing room only. It was an honor for our cadets to participate in this celebration of his life.
