Our work in East Africa was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Audio reporting. It recognizes a year of relentless reporting in region in the grips of war and political turmoil. Our submitted work is here. Take a listen!

The Mexican government has insisted that only 27 people have died in Acapulco. Today we watched rescue crews pull bodies out of the water. One of the security officials on scene told us they recovered 50 bodies today. 1/

My favorite part of Zimbabwean military and police bands is the Hosho guys. (At Robert Mugabe’s funeral.)

I just did an interview over the phone with @HEBobiwine. He says he is essentially under house arrest — with no one allowed in or out of his house. He says the government’s intent is to isolate him.

We’ve spent the day in Acapulco and the devastation is breathtaking. Almost all the high rises are heavily damaged. But the most heartbreaking part is all the regular people who have lost what they have worked decades for. This is what one neighborhood looks like. 1/

Being worth about $20 million USD is "not very rich" says Kenya's once opposition leader.
I am not rich. I am only worth about Ksh. 2 billion shillings. ~ Raila #RailaSpeaks @Warungu

The families of the fishermen who dock their boats here say there were dozens of people here when the storm hit. The first picture shows the search teams trying find bodies. When they bring them onshore, the families huddle around to see if it’s their loved one.

“This is going to be a long haul,” he said. People are buried under mud; there were fishermen in boats. He says they will be finding bodies for weeks. The missing people reports, he said, are many more. 2/2

I had an interview scheduled with @HEBobiwine this morning at 930 am. We were told by security agents that we had no clearance to enter his house. #UgandaDecides2021

This is rather odd. The man who presents himself as Kenya’s moral compass, praising an MP caught on video shooting man in the face.
I have seen the clip of Hon. Babu Owino engaged in pedagogical mathematics lesson. Oh men, this is damn thrilling. I can't stop watching it. So this guy is such a gifted teacher, and of mathematics at that? Honestly, I give it to him. Well done Sir. On this you've won my respect!

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta doesn’t directly congratulate @WilliamsRuto, but promises an orderly transition. This is significant in a country where politics is often prosecuted with violence and in a world where an American president refused to show this expected magnanimity.

My friend in Khartoum told me, it’s winter bring a jacket. We’re covering protests. I left my backup phone out while filing a report and it went to sleep. This is “winter” in Khartoum.

Here’s how different indigenous groups from across Guatemala are marching into the capital city. It was them who set up nationwide-roadblocks, it was them who stayed on the streets for 100+ days to make sure their vote was respected. 1/

This is what a giant triumph for democracy looks like this evening in Guatemala. This is what it looks like when a group of young people, the indigenous communities outsmart, outmaneuver and outlast a political elite that had come to be known as the pact of the corrupt.
