The Astor Place Starbucks closed for good last night. The SB signage is gone from this 4k-foot space, which they'd been in since March '95. Management told @Joy_of_photos that "the landlords jacked up the rent so astronomically high that even corporate Starbucks couldn't pay it."
There is a bonkers looooong line on 2nd Avenue in the East Village this morning for a pop-up (138 2nd Ave.) featuring the viral chocolate muffins from the Olympics Village in Paris.
McSorley's Old Ale House is celebrating its 170th anniversary this weekend at 15 E. 7th St. There's live music ... with cake from another East Village classic — Veniero's, which is only 130 years old.
When workers removed the bar from the former Grassroots Tavern (1975-2017) on St. Mark's Place last week, they discovered these old murals. I have no idea how old they old. The landmarked building dates to 1832. [Photos by Derek Berg]
After nearly 25 years on Astor Place, Kmart shuttered this location yesterday. Rumors of a closure date to early 2018, though the store ended up downsizing from 3 to 2 floors at the time.

Pillow-Cat Books, an animal-focused bookshop (used, new & antique), opened a few days ago at 328 E. 9th St. in the East Village. Books must all have an animal or animal character. Open 11-7 Tuesday through Sunday.
