    The extraordinary thing about gen-z folk morality is that it’s both very pro diversity and anti value pluralism. There are infinitely many ways to lead a good life, but somehow there are no real conflicts and trade-offs: all good things go together, all bad things go together.

    One reason why I wouldn’t pay $44bn for this website is that young people aren’t on it. My students deride it as a dusty old place “where professors fight, or so we hear”.

    Saddened by the casual cruelty on here towards the thousands of UK academics facing redundancy. Even for a such a niche job, but we’ve really failed in communicating what kind of personal tragedy this is. It’s a sort of Rust Belt for PhDs situation 1/2

    Explanation: Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-first Century and Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy are different ways of expressing a nostalgic hankering for a postwar world of equality that in fact only existed for white men.
